Pen Son (Figlio di Penna)

Project description

Carlo and Marta, unable to have children, adopt Vinicio, an Eastern European orphan, “from a distance,” maintaining a correspondence with him. This kind gesture, however, never leads to a direct acquaintance, for the reason how sincere it is unknown of not depriving the child of his environment and culture.

The two worlds thus remain too distant for there to be any real possibility of understanding each other: while Carlo and Marta lead a life of good feelings and morality, Vinicio lives a completely different reality, until events bring him face to face with his adoptive parents.

“Son of the Pen” offers the opportunity to consider the concept of solidarity in an alternative way. Regardless of the social need for forms of assistance that have now become institutionalized, such as long-distance adoption, this practice demonstrates, in any case, the relationship that exists between those who offer and those who receive, or rather between the “evolved” West and the most depressed areas of the world” (Francesco Amato).

Pen Son is a short film directed by Francesco Amato, produced by Cometa Film. The film was selected for the Cannes Film Festival and received the Jameson Award in Turin.

I composed the original music for the film, creating a score that supports its intimate and emotional narrative.
